MEENA KUMAR
Mahjabeen Bano (August 1, 1932 - March 31, 1972), commonly known as Meena Kumari, was a prominent Indian movie actress.
Meena Kumari gained fame with her role as a heroine in Vijay Bhatt's Baiju Bawra (1952). This heroine always negated herself for the material and spiritual advancement of the man she loved and was even willing to annihilate herself to provide him the experience of pain so that his music would be enriched. She became the first actress to win the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1953 for this performance.
Meena Kumari highly successfully played the roles of a suffering woman in Parineeta (1953), Daera (1953), Ek Hi Raasta (1956), Sharda (1957), and Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960). Though she cultivated the image of a tragedienne, she also performed commendably in a few light-hearted movies like Azaad (1955), Miss Mary (1957), Shararat (1959), and Kohinoor (1960).
One of her best known performance was of an alcoholic wife in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), which was produced by Guru Dutt. In one memorable scene, the heroine, Choti Bahu, dresses for her husband, providing a poignant presentation of a woman's expectations and sexual desire.
At that time, Meena Kumari herself was on a road to gradual ruin in her own personal life. Like her character, Choti Bahu, she began to drink heavily, though she carried on. In fact, in 1962, she made history by being nominated for three Filmfare Best Actress Awards for her roles in Aarti , Main Chup Rahungi, and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. She won the award for her role in Aarti .
For four more years, Meena Kumari performed admirably in Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Kaajal (1965), and Phool Aur Patthar (1966). However, she relied more and more on intimate relationships with younger men like Dharmendra, and often dulled her senses with liquor. She spent the last years of her life playing the doomed woman. Because of heavy drinking, she increasingly lost her good looks, and began playing character roles in B grade movies like Jawab (1970) and Dushmun (1971).
She developed an attachment to writer-lyricist Gulzar and acted in his directorial debut, Mere Apne (1971), Meena Kumari presented a strong portrayal of an elderly woman who got caught between two street gangs of frustrated, unemployed youth and got killed, her death making the youth realize the futility of violence. In 1972, she recognized that she had a limited time left on this earth, and so she went out of her way to complete at the earliest the cult classic, Pakeezah (1972). Initially, after its release in February 1972, Pakeezah opened to a lukewarm response from the public; however, after Meena Kumari's death less than two months later, people flocked to see it.
Throughout her life, Meena Kumari had a love-hate relationship with movies.
Besides being a top-notch actress, she was a talented poetess, and recorded a disc of her Urdu poems, I write, I recite with music by Khayyam.
Three weeks after the release of Pakeezah, Meena Kumari became seriously ill, and passed away on March 31, 1972 of cirrhosis of the liver . At her death, she was in more or less the same financial circumstance as her parents at the time of her birth: It is said that when she died in a nursing home, there was no money to pay her hospital bills.

A short scene shot during dress rehearsal from SOCSA's Fall Play, The Crucible. Performances are at Dana Hills High School's Porthole Theater on October 23, 24 and 25 at 7 pm.
BUY TICKETS ONLINE AT: http://www.SOCSArts.org/boxoffice.php#crucible-tickets
Come see Arthur Miller's exploration of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, The Crucible, as performed by talented SOCSA students from Dana Hills High School, under the direction of SOCSA Drama Teacher, Pattie Sexton, at the Porthole Theater on October 23, 24 and 25 at 7 pm.
When Abigail Williams (Taylor Wahl) is held in suspicion of witchcraft, she in turn levels charges against John (Aston Reyes) and Elizabeth Proctor (Paige Simon). Sara Standen, as Anne Putnam, and a talented cast of SOCSA Juniors and Seniors give a fantastic performance you won't want to miss.
Using the historical subject of the Salem Witch trials, Arthur Miller's play The Crucible (written in 1953) presents an allegory for events in contemporary America. The Salem Witch Trials took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, and were based on the accusations of a twelve-year-old girl named Anne Putnam (Sara Standen). Putnam claimed that she had witnessed a number of Salem's residents holding black sabbaths and consorting with Satan. Based on these accusations, an English-American clergyman named Rev. Parris (Jason Roeder) spearheaded the prosecution of dozens of alleged witches in the Massachusetts colony. Nineteen people were hanged and one pressed to death over the following two years.
Tickets for The Crucible are $12 for adults, $10 for students/senior citizens and you are encouraged to BUY TICKETS ONLINE NOW. Last minute tickets will be available for sale starting at 6:00pm just prior to the performances at the SOCSA Box Office at Dana Hills High School. All proceeds go to support arts education for the SOCSA drama program at Dana Hills High School.

It's a good thing I didn't post this last night after the VMA's actually aired. It would have been a rant through the ENTIRE thing. This one I'm only going to rant through most of it.
I want to know who saw the VMA's last night. I've read reviews on last nights award show and pretty much everyone didn't like it. Not only did the Jonas Brothers not win a single award, but they were made fun of through the whole show. By who? Russell Brand. Have you ever heard of him? Me either. Apparently he's famous in a whole other country, so the people in charge of the VMA's decided to bring him to America and host the show. Why? Because they obviously have no taste.
This "Russell" guy was not only rude, but nearly impossible to understand. He spoke in an extremely thick British accent. And then he has the nerve to talk bad about our president. When he's not even from this country. I'm not sure who he was talking about when he said "retarted cowboy" but a lot of people think he was talking about Bush. And yes, Bush hasn't done a great job as president (I'm not going to get into politics) but he's not even from this country, he has no right to say what he thinks about the people in charge here. And he said the thing about the president at the very beginning of the show, and it only got worse from there.
After he was done talking about the president, he went onto the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings. And I want to say this right now, I think Perez Hilton and Jordin Sparks were amazing for standing up for them like they did. Anyway, he starts talking about how the boys wear purity rings and how a "little sex" isn't a bad thing. Maybe not to him but he's a grown man, these boys are not even 21 yet. The youngest isn't even 16. I don't know if he knew that or not, but if he did it must mean that he wasn't a virgin for very long.
And for those of you who didn't see it you weren't missing out on anything, so don't worry about it. Also if you didn't watch it Jordin said "It's not bad to wear a promise ring, because not everybody guy or girl wants to be a slut." I think that definitly was a highlight of the show. Another being the Jonas Brothers performance of 'Love Bug'.
I loved how they started off on the steps and then all of a sudden they're like on stage with fans and everything around them. Anyway...
I find it pretty funny how Britney Spears had NEVER won a VMA award before and then in 1 award show she won 3. Surprise surprise. I've not seen nor heard her song/video for "Piece Of Me" and I really don't want to. I'm actually surprised she won the awards after everything that's happened to her. I don't think I have to go into detail when I say everything that's happened to her either.
Taylor Swift did a wonderful job hosting the beginning part in my opinon. I was upset she didn't win the New Artist award, even though I figured Miley would take it. But instead it was Tokio Hotel. And I'm not even sure who they really are.
And when 'Lil Wayne' (...?) came out I really wasn't surprised by the fact that his pants were nearly down to his knees. Does he not own a belt? I don't listen to that kind of music and I know a lot of people wear baggy pants, but at an award show to wear baggy pants that's so far down that it shows your butt?
And the outfits "Slipknot" was wearing was just plain creepy. At least most people were in suits and dresses.
And although I'm not into Zac Efron anymore, I have to say he looked really nice last night. And so did the other HSM cast members.
All together, last night wasn't the best night of my life. The beginning when everyone was arriving I have to say was more entertaining than the actual show. So since I'm bored I've decided to make a list of my favorite parts counting down to the best.
10. Drake Bell and Josh Peck introducing an act. (I've always liked them)
9. The HSM cast introducing an act.
8. Taylor introducing the Jonas Brothers.
7. Jordin Sparks sticking up for the boys.
6. Taylor at the beginning of the show.
5. When the best new artist was announced (I just liked the tense moment...)
4. Russell Something-or-Other apologizing.
3. Taylor interviewing the boys before the awards.
2. Perez Hilton sticking up for the boys.
1. The boys performance.
Now the worst parts would have to be as follows:
5. The performances by multiple artists (Rihanna, Lil Wayne ect.)
4. Britney opening the show.
3. The host trying to be funny.
2. The host being rude and talking about stuff he knows nothing about.
1. Just the host in general.
Hopefully the CMA Music Festival that's on tonight will be better.
PS. I thought Miley and Taylor looked beautiful last night and the boys looked handsome, as usual.
